Limited play in this game is decided by what's in the commons and uncommons. A sealed pool is six packs — 96 cards. Strip out 6 leaders, 6 bases, 6 rare/legendary slots, and 6 foils, and you're left with 72 cards that are common or uncommon. Three-quarters of the cards you build a deck from. Rares and legendaries get the spoiler hype, but the format itself is shaped by the rarity slots that actually fill out the curve, the aspects, and the keyword interactions everyone touches.

ASH is the eighth set. With its full pool now visible, we can put it next to every set that came before and read the shape from the outside.

1. Rarity distribution

Every set ships a fixed rarity ladder. The first block — Spark of Rebellion (SOR, 252 cards), Shadows of the Galaxy (SHD, 262), Twilight of the Republic (TWI, 257) — ran slightly leaner. From Jump to Lightspeed (JTL) onward the count has locked at 264 cards with the exact same split: 116 commons, 60 uncommons, 58 rares, 20 legendaries, 10 specials.

ASH matches that envelope exactly. 176 of the 264 — two-thirds of the set — are C or UC. That's the pool a drafter has to know cold.

2. Cost curve at C/UC

Resource-cost distribution across the common and uncommon pool, one line per set.

ASH sits in the middle of the band. Average resource cost 3.27 puts it just under A Lawless Time (LAW) (3.38) and Secrets of Power (SEC) (3.30), and well clear of TWI's top-heavy outlier (3.47). The two-drop slot is the densest (45), which is the modal pattern for every Block A and Block B set — drafters can build curves without struggling for early plays.

The notable line is the 7+ slot at 8 cards. That's a real top end for a Limited pool, including a single 8-cost uncommon — [[Home One|home-one-heart-of-the-fleet]], a 7/10 Sentinel that heals all damage from each friendly unit when it lands. When the top of the curve has a bomb that big sitting at uncommon, the pool is bombier than the average suggests.

Splitting the curve into units and non-units (events + upgrades) tells a sharper story:

Two ASH-specific findings jump out.

ASH ships 13 one-cost units — tied with SHD and JTL for the most in any set. The 1-drop unit slot is dense; aggressive starts have bodies to work with. LOF (9) and TWI (11) were the thinner pulls.

ASH ships zero non-units at 5+ resource cost. Every late-game card in the C/UC pool is a unit — no expensive events, no expensive upgrades. The top end of ASH Limited is decided by which 5-, 6-, 7-, and 8-cost units players resolve, not by which board wipe or buff event they pull. LAW had 5 non-units at 5+; SEC and LOF had 1 each; the historical norm is 2–3. ASH inverts that — the late game is fought with bodies, not spells.

3. Aspect composition at C/UC

The aspect system has two layers. The four primary aspects — Vigilance, Command, Aggression, Cunning — are the color identity of a card. Heroism and Villainy are alignment overlays, not primaries; they ride on top of a primary or stand alone. A few cards are Neutral (no aspect at all). And starting in LAW, an increasing number are multi-primary — two color identities on the same card.

Splitting the chart this way separates two stories the data is telling.

The top panel shows the four primaries. Through SHD, TWI, JTL, Legends of the Force (LOF), and SEC, the primaries sat in the 36–38 band — quietly balanced, never the story. LAW spiked all four to 48. ASH lands the primaries at 40 each, with zero spread. Whatever ASH limited becomes, drafting one of the four primary colors won't be structurally harder or easier than drafting another.

The bottom panel shows the rest. LAW's primary-spike was paid for here: Heroism-only and Villainy-only cards dropped to 3 each — the lowest of any Block A or Block B set — and 30 cards picked up a second primary color (the new Multicolor mechanic, more on that below). ASH reverts to the historical pattern: 8 Heroism-only, 8 Villainy-only, 6 Neutral, and just 6 multi-primary. Block B's first two sets are using opposite design strategies at the alignment layer.

4. Headline mechanics by set

Every set since SHD has introduced at least one new mechanic at the C/UC layer. Most have shipped two. Each set's mechanics, with the C/UC card count:

A few notes on what each mechanic does.

SHD introduced Bounty (an opponent's unit becomes a target whose defeat triggers a reward) and Smuggle (an alternative cost paid from the resource zone). Both reshaped tempo and risk in their own ways.

TWI introduced Exploit (sacrifice friendlies for a discount when playing) and Coordinate (effects that trigger when you control three or more units). Both lean on board state.

JTL introduced Piloting (units can be played as pilot upgrades on vehicles, swapping role between unit and modifier) and Indirect Damage (damage dealt at the controller's choice of targets). Piloting is the most-printed mechanic across all sets at 26 C/UC cards.

LOF introduced Hidden (a unit can't be attacked the turn it's played) and the Force token family — cards reference "use the Force" and "the Force is with you" to spend the resource of a tracked Force position. Force tokens are the densest non-keyword mechanic ever shipped at C/UC (43 cards).

SEC introduced Plot (an upfront tax paid to set up a later payoff) and Disclose (a card revealed from hand for an effect). Both want sequencing decisions.

LAW introduced Multicolor (two primary aspects on one card, the cause of LAW's chart spike above) and Credits (a numbered resource token several cards mint and spend). LAW shipped the densest single mechanic of any set: 30 multicolor cards at C/UC.

ASH introduces Support (the unit doesn't have to attack the turn it's played — a different friendly attacks and inherits its abilities for that attack) and Advantage tokens (a new currency several cards mint, hand around, and spend). The headline counts are 20 and 24 — squarely in the historical band.

5. Arena split — ASH leans space-heavy

Every Star Wars Unlimited unit lives in one of two arenas — Ground or Space — and decks have to compete on both fronts. The ratio at C/UC controls how much each arena gets played in Limited.

The historical pattern is striking. Six of the eight sets ship a Space-arena count of 26–27 cards at C/UC. The two exceptions are at opposite ends: JTL (the vehicle set, 64 Space cards — basically a 50/50 split) and ASH at 38, the second-largest Space allocation in the game's history.

That's a 40% larger Space pool than the historical norm. In practice, it means Space-arena strategies in ASH Limited will have meaningfully more bodies to work with than they did in LOF, SEC, or LAW. The arena that was usually a side-show — present, but rarely the deciding board — has a structurally bigger seat at the table.

It also explains some of the C/UC bombs: [[Home One|home-one-heart-of-the-fleet]] (8-cost uncommon) and [[Alphabet Squadron U-Wing|alphabet-squadron-u-wing-quiet-devotion]] (5-cost uncommon) are both Space units. When the Space band gets 12 more cards than usual, some of them get expensive and good.

6. Statline drift — units have quietly gotten fatter

Total stats per resource cost have barely moved across eight sets — every set's units average ~2.1 to 2.3 stats per cost. What HAS moved is the distribution. At every low-cost slot, Block A and Block B sets ship more high-HP units than the first block did. The format's gotten grindier from the bottom up.

Three slices, three stories.

2-cost units with 4+ HP. SOR shipped 4 of them. The Block A/B band runs 7–10. LOF was the peak at 10. ASH is at 7 — right on the Block A/B norm. The "vanilla 2-drop" used to be a 2/3; now it's a 2/3 or a 2/4 or a 1/4, and which one you open changes how aggressive the matchup plays.

3-cost units with 4+ HP. SOR had 8 across its entire C/UC pool — out of 22 three-drops total, that's 36%. Block A and B sets ship 12–15, against a slightly larger three-drop slot. The numbers actually understate the shift: SHD pushed 15 of 27 (56%) and ASH lands 12 of 26 (46%). A three-drop in the first block was likely to be a 3/3 or 2/3; a three-drop in Block B is likely to outlive a removal spell.

4-cost units with 5+ HP. Quieter through Block A — 4 to 5 cards per set was the historical band. Then LAW spiked to 11 and ASH to 10. The "fat four-drop" used to be a chase uncommon; in Block B it's a staple. Removal at 4 resources that used to one-shot a unit now needs help.

Pulling the thread: a Limited format defined by harder-to-kill bodies plays slower than a format with thin units. ASH inherits the LAW shift — combat decisions get more expensive, removal spells matter more, and the trade math at every cost slot tilts toward defenders.

Read-out

Six charts, six short observations:

Rarity distribution matches the Block A/B norm exactly — 264 cards, 176 of them C/UC.
Cost curve is in-band but tops out heavy — average 3.27, with 8 cards at cost 7+ including an uncommon 7/10 bomb. The late game is fought with units; ASH ships zero 5+ non-units.
Aspect composition resets — primaries land at 40 each (perfectly balanced after LAW's 48-spike), while H-only / V-only / Neutral / Multi all return to historical norms.
Two headline mechanics, in the historical pattern — Support at 20 cards, Advantage tokens at 24. LAW also shipped two; SEC, LOF, JTL each shipped two.
Space-arena gets a real allocation — 38 Space cards at C/UC, second-most in any set, 40% above the historical norm.
Units keep getting fatter at the low end — 4-cost HP-5+ doubled from the Block A norm of 4–5 to LAW's 11 and ASH's 10. The grind continues.

Whatever ASH limited turns into when it opens, the pool itself reads as deliberately structured: balanced where LAW drifted, dense where the format needs it, fatter at every low cost slot, and front-loaded with mechanical text at the rarity tier where Limited actually lives.

That's the only honest read until people start drafting it.
